Cultures of Peace in Honduras and El Salvador

Many vulnerable urban neighborhoods across Latin America have been dominated by armed gangs for many decades. Residents of these neighborhoods must contend with multiple obstacles, including violence from a variety of offenders, as well as a scarcity of resources and opportunities. In this project, we are interested in examining how residents of these neighborhoods are impacted by violence and how they work to promote resilience and strengthen the social fabric of their neighborhoods despite many obstacles. The project examines these challenges and strategies of survival and resilience in El Salvador and Honduras. Our objective is to better understand how ordinary residents promote cultures of peace in these contexts and what initiatives can best support these efforts.

The project has several components, including interviews, field work, and analysis of news and social media. We work collaboratively with those most affected by gang violence to co-develop research questions, methods, and analysis.
